Michael Powell
- Career Summary
- Mike Powell is a Senior Consultant in
BSG's Distribution and Logistics
Services in our End-to-End Supply
Chain practice. He has more than
twenty-five years experience in supply
a proven track record as an innovative business
leader with leading global retailers in the food and
general retail industries. His vision and drive are
demonstrated through leadership positions held in
both US and UK retailing. Mike’s ability to manage
and motivate large teams has led to the delivery of
high quality customer-focused results.
Mike has extensive strategic skills in supply chain
management, including DC development, network
planning, warehouse and transportation operations,
Activity Base Costing, outsourcing, and enabling
information systems.
Experience
As Senior Vice President for Supply Chain at a major
Northeastern retailer, Mike successfully managed
the integration of two retailers' supply chains
following their merger, delivering savings in excess
of $12 million. The networks included four major
distribution centers with 1.5 million square feet of
warehousing and a transportation fleet with over
800 units.
As part of his integration plan, he supervised
closure of two unionized distribution facilities
without major business disruption; as well as
defined a merged supply chain strategy for the next
four years, which is on target to reduce operating
costs by a further $10 million to 2.5% of sales, one
of lowest ratios in the industry. In addition, he
introduced initiatives which resulted in a 50%
increase in back-haul revenue, as well as a 20%
improvement in warehouse efficiency.
Previously, Mike led supply chain and information
technology functions at a $2 billion UK home
improvement retailer and directed supply chain
operations for one of the leading UK grocery
retailers.
Mike is a senior manager in our end-to-end supply
chain practice and currently advises Retail Coalition
global clients on supply chain optimization,
benchmarking and best practices, as well as
lecturing at Northeastern University on distribution
and logistics strategy.
